While we stepped into the winter season, 20th June 2024 was a day to honour our fellow residents from refugee backgrounds on this land. On World Refugee Day, we acknowledge the strength and courage of people who flee from their home countries forcefully.
World Refugee Day falls on 20th June each year and is celebrated around the globe. The United Nations designated this day to honour people who must flee their home countries to escape persecution or conflict without a choice. We also take the time to remember their strength and resilience as they rebuild their lives in foreign countries.
Being a host country to the former refugees, Aotearoa, New Zealand, must provide a safe and healthy environment for our fellow residents to feel secure and thrive on this land so that they can call Aotearoa their home. Though we cannot fully know how tedious and traumatic their journey could be, we can open our arms and hearts to welcome them. We are glad to learn that some organisations quietly work alongside our fellow residents, young and old, to make them feel cared for and empowered to start or continue their lives.
